Leather thickness

Hi guys, one question,
What's the generally accepted thickness of the leather in a type A-2 jacket?
I have seen some leather samples from Aero and it was pretty thick.
But what's the right thickness? I have no tool to measure it.
1.5 mm, 2mm? what?
If I understand correctly this lostworlds inc gyu is making them pretty thick, like 2mm (sounds like an armor)
while ELC makes them thin (some people complaining too thinn) like 1mm to 1.1 mm

So what's really the 'correct' thickness?

The answer is there is no correct answer. I have four originals all with different thickness. My Monarch is almost like a Lost World in thickness while my Aero is almost like the ELC. I have had and handled a few originals over the years and have found that the thickness of the horsehide differs all over the place. I say you find a thickness you like and use that as your measure for a repro.

Agree with George. I personally like a heavier hide but horsehide's inherent density makes for a substantial feel in an A-2, even in the 3-oz. range. GW's latest offerings such as the dull russet pigment-dyed horsehide are in my opinion a nearly ideal weight. Robust, but not overly stiff or restrictive.

Reviving a 14 year old thread because I know how to use the search function and I don't want to open a new one :D

I've been wondering about this lately. The ELC Star I had, as well as the BK 27752 I still own are rather thin, light and quite supple. Very pliable, not quite as much as goatskin, but close. The Platon Dubow I had, though, as well as the BK 23380 is a bit thicker, more robust, they need more breaking in, like a pair of Doc Martens (forgive the analogy).

I find HH A-2s are horrible compared with goatskin A-2s!

I know it's "historically accurate" but that style of jacket is basically a windbreaker, you need a leather that has a level of stretch and flexibility that HH isn't able to provide (and HH tends to be thicker than necessary amongst the A-2 makers)

-I don't like cats

-You just don't know how to cook them (c)

You just haven't see the right HHs. One of my HH Dubow is softer and flexibility than a goatskin A-2 and just as thin in thickness, not to mention a number of the originals I've seen.

It's got nothing to do with soft and flexible......HH doesn't stretch and give like goatskin

And the "top tier" makers don't make thin HH......they use thick heavyweight HH for some unfathomable reason when creating A-2s

HH might work for a G-1 or a "Perfecto" "D Pocket" MC jackets.....they don't work for A-1/A-2s or "Hartmanns"
