He was in the Marine Corps along with his brother Henry. They were in different units but ended up jumping into the same foxhole at some point during Guadalcanal. These two pics tell the whole story on the toll that combat takes on a body, if you are lucky enough to survive....
I'm guessing that The Pacific miniseries is quite telling of your uncle's experience at Guadalcanal? My impression was that it was way worse than the Band of Brothers experience on the European front because of the terrain, the climate, and the fighting style adopted by Japanese soldiers at the time...

that is some very cool stuff there steve. talk about coming outta left field. did ya get many opportunities to talk with george? he seems to have been the prototypical hemingway protagonist.
