A type 98 sword.
Its former owner bring (the blade) into China at 1937, and fought a campaign here, when he was a junior officer. See the letters carved on the tang.
At 1945, He was promoted to Major ,and stationed at Iwojima , later the sword was captured by American.
Pretty sure he ordered a new better quality handle after he get promoted to Major rank.
It is relatively new, on some parts, plated gold remains, it does not looks like a sword handle, carried by an active service officer for eight years.
