A more probable scenario is what many of us here have always thought, which is, you stand in line and tell the supply chief your size and take whatever he tosses back at you.

Nothing has changed in that regard. Life magazine may have been doing a story on that graduating class, a Senator's son may have made a call to Dad to make sure he got a new jacket? Never spend too much time thinking why the military do things.

It seems to me that Pensacola is an odd place to have initially sent those M-422 jackets. That is if they were meant to be first distributed into the fleet in stead of graduating flight students.

Good point Dave. Perhaps they were for instructors and other senior people?
