The photo of the Typhoon over Dortmund-Ems is incredible. Not just of the airplane, but of the landscape, with shell holes.

The picture shows a 182 Squadron aircraft force landed at an airfield and in the process of being recovered. It can be seen just how rugged the Typhoon really is, the long groove in the airfield at XM-K came to rest and seemingly suffering only bent props and damaged radiator. In the process of being recovered other aircraft can be seen in the background also being recovered, it seems that one has suffered an undercarriage collapse and I8-J a forced landing.

Pilot Officer John D. Flintoff of 440 (City of Ottawa) RCAF Squadron was flying a Hawker Typhoon Mk IB PD592, and had departed from RAF Eindhoven, Netherland with three others, on a mission to bomb a rail junction just west of Munster. Due to low cloud, they were diverted to another target when he was hit by flak, but he managed to crash land safely near Enschede, south east of Holten at 11.30am on February 24 1945.

Meet Flying Officer Jellicoe Scoon from Grenada. Scoon loved low level flying, flew Typhoons with 198 Squadron, was reprimanded for beating up the house of a girl he had met and forced landed PD466 near Eimke, Germany, after being hit on the 3 May 1945
