GW leathers Russet shades

I received a envelope containing the GW leather samples I ask for the other week. And we'll, I'm excited again. Still have a long wait, but another thing to keep me going.

I am down for two jackets from him. Both Monarch's the M-422 and the A-2.

I have a nice collection of original M-422a to G-1 jackets, but a M-422 is impossible to find.

The Monarch A-2 is a beautiful design simple and classic, and from looking at Andrew's original on another forum...
http://www.usaaf.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=439

And Persimmons on the dreaded TFL

From the colours I have received from GW I don't know whether light russet or dull is closer to these two jackets? Nor how it ages. Any help would be apriciated from anyone who has a jacket in either leather and how it is aging.

Thanks

Choices choices...I have a Monarch A2 very comfortable to wear...throw this into the mix...what about cowhide in seal...John took apart a Monarch for his pattern and found branding leading him to believe steer was used...he has advised me through email that seal was also used...downside he can't his pic of a seal one

Really, so it's choices, choices, choices. I think I'll probably stick with horse, just because its a bit legendary from GW.

And a russet colour is my first choice.

Would you post some pictures ofcourse monarch, unless there are some already on here. Love to see how they age.

hahaha, the as monarch is now back home in my collection. as graciously gave me first right to buy it back...which i did in a nyc second. best as i can tell, the jacket was originally a medium-light russet. it appears to have been made of hh, and most of the color has faded to a light, very light russet. i have heard of the monarchs in seal , but i have personally only seen monarch redyes in seal. all the others that i have seen have been in russet variations.

I will try get some pics up next couple of days,I am not best at posting them on this site but will have a go...err if not then will have to ask Roughwear to assist me again, sorry Andrew
Have to say I think steer is softer than the horse, even from the off.
I would like to see some more worn goat jackets on this site,am so tempted to get one myself,Cobblers perhaps you could post some updated pics from when I saw it in the flesh

Hi John,

I haven't actually worn it since the start of the year, I've been into my cloth jackets and the poor old A-2 has been largely ignored. Once Autumn kicks in I'll hopefully give it a run for it's money.

One factor that puts me off however is the slight red hue that runs through it, don't get me wrong I love it to bits but sometimes I find it a little too bright. It probably needs a good old bashing so maybe should start doing the diy in it. I recall Peter was fixing his Defender in his Eastman Cable and it looked all the better for it.
Luckily I'm in the queue for another GW (for the very last time and at old fashioned prices thankfully) around xmas time most likely a cowhide Aero so maybe that'll get me wearing regularly again.

We should arrange that meet up/drink up with Ian et al soon!

Have you tried dulling the hide down slightly?

I've got some terrific leather cream that will tone down the red rue slightly without doing anything else to mess up the hide.

I'm doing to reverse at the moment with my Doni (i.e. imparting a slightly more pronounced russet).

Cheers

Ian

Interesting Ian, worth a go. What's it called?

Or is it something you have created in yourself in an underground laboratory the location of which is a closely guarded secret?

Ah, I can sell you at great expense...

No, just been playing around with different shades of Grison leather (http://www.theleathercare.co.uk/renovation.html).

I found that medium brown (03) gave me a really good colour that would be spot on for a whole host of goatskin jackets (by examining Gary's book), notably the Spiewak, posted by John Jeter on the black pages http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthre ... Collection, but it's just a little dark/earth brown for the Doni so I'm going to play around with something a little more russet.

Having tinted it (particularly the hide between the pebbles where goat is concerned), I then rub in a circular motion the hide with a mild kitchen pad (http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/59416 ... e_for.html) NOT A BRILLO PAD!! ) to reduce the shine - works a treat.

Steve...it is so warm at mo so not worn mine much either, think goat is a shade lighter in weight but probably still too much at present..yep drink with Ian and Andrew would be good.
Ian I have seen your Donni and the colour you have produced looks very good, be nice to see in the flesh.
Not to distract from the thread,Chamboid how much colour variant is there in the samples you received?

If you're gonna head for a drink round london way, I know Andrews not to far, wouldn't mind a pint.

The colour variant isn't that much, no where near as much as the monarch dull russet on the available jackets bar, but closer to the size 40 in the sale pages.

But it's hard to choose, because its so close. I had in my head a light russet to compliment the LW 'dubow' I have and the BK rough wear in seal.

And also just falling in love with the two examples in the links.

I want to know how much the dull russet will lighten up, or if I should just go with the lighter one from the start...

Not too warm for my Doni today, thankfully the start of cooler weather I think.

The goat is the most wearable that I've had - very close to the G&F M-422A in terms of weight/feel that is now down under.

If I can sort the russet colour then in contravention of Lever's law it'll be a long term keeper. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Probably best asking John if the jacket will darken or lighten..I had the dull on a USL that has been sold on to a member here and I really liked the shade, from some of the pics the light looks loads lighter but that might just be light etc..if you have the samples go by them..I think generally Monarch A2 are lighter shades but Andrew or one of the others will know for sure

As for a drink I have met Andrew near Clacketts on the M25...in eyes of fairness if you hook up with him maybe we can head to Dorking...I know Ian is Hampshire and Steve Sussex so it would be a central location
Both Steve and me do shifts so if he pm's me some dates I will try n sort it out

The colour of original Monarchs varied from light russet to darker shades of russet. I have never seen an original made from seal leather, only depot re-painted ones. My GW Monarch is a nice russet shade and is the one on the GW website. There is a review of it in the repro section here.

Yes it would be good to meet up with John, Ian, Steve and Chamboid.
