Ian, There was not a hh label on government contract original A2s. ELC and GW both add them. Perhaps they will help well informed future owners identify a repro from an original?
Thanks Andrew, I thought not.
Personally, I'd prefer to omit the label and ask John to sign it somewhere more discreetly (inner sleeve, back of pocket?). Not a fan of branded goods - hopefully the goat doesn't bear a label.
John has signed and dated two of my GW A-2s. He signs them along the inside torso seam of the liner. I think it is a wonderful and appropriate finishing touch for the artist to sign his masterpieces! Very cool. I think John should do this as a matter of course.
John's horsehide label is a vintage style hh label commonly found in civilian jackets.
I think I prefer ELC's placement of the label as it doesn't require any additional stiching (uses the pocket stitching)
and could be removed if one tries carefully
I don't know if it's purpose is to identify the repro against original
but I 'd say it gives a certain amount of prestige (showing/knowing that the hide is horse) etc.
Thanks to everyone for the comments; I am very pleased with the jacket. Carlo, the leather is GW's LHJ105, the darkest seal available. John said this HH was the most accurate reproduction given the color most commonly seen on 1755s. I also liked the way it set the purple color knits apart from the rest of the jacket; almost like Aero's red knits. I'll post photos of the jacket again in a few months to give a reference on how it ages.
I don't want to hijack the jacket thread, but the label thing is an interesting topic. I think we all realize it's getting harder to identify the real deal from some of the latest repro's from certain makers. Being that good, does it make sense to mark them as such? Does John just want to get credit where it's due? I have no idea. Aero adds a pocket tag that can be left in, or taken out without damaging the jacket. There are people that knowingly or unknowingly will attempt to sell off a repro as original. I don't think it's the maker's responsibility to label them, but I can see why someone would want to - for a number of reasons.
Sorry to hijack. But how many times can you say the jacket is perfect
