I posted these images from John's website recently.

I've worn the jacket on several occasions now - generally in cold dry weather (and a bit of drizzle).
It has been liberally sprayed with warm water and worn until dry - this tightened up the lower back and relaxed the grain in places.

The work on the sleeves went very well (see below), I'm much happier with the knits as I felt that these 'ballooned' a little.

Will take some photos wearing it in due course, but it's very comfortable with room for a little layering (e.g. shirt and knitted waistcoat).

Looking very relaxed and comfortable, what a beauty. Nice one Ian, and yes such an excellent job on the sleeves.

Or is that the invisible man !!

No doubt been discussed and I must have missed but any reason for the buttons rather than press studs at the waist? Quite sharp pocket flaps too but nice jacket nonetheless!
cheers

The pocket flap pattern, single button closure to collar knit, more central pocket placement and two buttons to the waist are all features found on an earlier A-1 pattern.
Actually, the single button neck closure/buttoned waistband are more commonly seen in period images than the later, snapped version.
Personally, I prefer this configuration.

You'll see some of the same configuration (single button collar/angular pocket flaps/double button at waist) here on John's site: http://www.goodwearleather.com/original_type_a1/

Come to think of it, aside from Suit Up and Gary Eastman's A-1, it's quite rare to see period photos of an A-1 with two buttons and snaps (or am I imagining that?).

Incidentally, the last one appears to have a combination 37J1 and '37J1A', doesn't it? Although there don't appear to be 'bellows' pockets on the zipped jacket near the left/centre (which might be a civilian jacket I suppose).

I hadn't even spotted the single button/loop collar albeit I do recall it being discussed previously!
Oh no, does this mean I now have to have yet another version too? Crikey, imagine how many jackets we'd own if that were the case (a la Andrew/Roughwear and his A2 collection)!! I think I actually prefer the 2 button but very subjective of course and to repeat, a lovely jacket still.
Oh yea, pics please
cheers

Don't start me on the 'number of versions that I'd need'.
If I were to count up the different variants of collar/buttons/snaps/pocket placement if would be mind boggling.
Personally, I'm less keen on the chrome tanned sheepskin 37J1 with the high patch pockets (although I like the version with the internal pockets with external pocket flaps).
At present I'm happy enough with the early pattern GW A-1 as pictured and an ELC A-1 ('usual' pocket flaps, two button collar/snaps).
I'll post some comparison images in due course.

These comments notwithstanding, I'm still planning to get an RM 37J1B.
