I have two and one had the strap already torn away. IIRC it feels like leather seams underneath but it might just be fabric pockets for the plates. One of mine, maybe both, has the a2(of M4a2) hand written on the label. Maybe it was a conversion from an earlier helmet. The leather loop would obviously be gone where the ear flaps were added but the curiosity still burns.

Yes , i had one as well with the a2 handwritten along with the spec no changed .
You know what they say ?
