G1 Authentication

Ok so I just bought a G1 USN flight jacket and I’m having concerns of it authenticity.
So, it has a tag with the contract # and all that stuff and it has a piece of leather stitched to the chest with the name: Scotty written in what looks like is the same “ink” as the inner tag. I got it from an estate sale and. The gentleman has dementia so the only info I have is that the coat was given to him by a friend who served in the late ‘70s and 80’s. So I know the jacket is supposed to have a USN stamp on it either where the collar flap is or the back of the collar or on the zipper protector.

I’m gonna send some photos. Any information would be greatly appreciated! I’m leaning towards maybe not authentic but that’s mostly due the lack of a USN stamp and the snap with the brand(KUANG HUEI) on it(which is the snap for the left inside breast pocket). Thank You ALL!!

Kermit’s spot on . This is not an authentic USN issued G-1 jacket . It’s a commercial facsimile ( notice I didn’t even say repro) of a navy flight jacket . Hopefully you didn’t pay too much for it. Don’t feel bad most times that this happens it’s an immediate learning curve. Consider the cost of your jacket as tuition to the “University of The Vintage Leather Jacket Forum” . ;)

Hey man thanks, I kinda knew it but it was listed as Authentic on eBay and I didn’t do my research till after I bought it.. instant learning curve is right!!

So what do you think would’ve been too much?

So this jacket I have isn’t even a decent repro? I mean it fits well and it is vintage due to quite a bit of wear but I’m thinking m’89. And it’s not made in the US either right?

I’m taking an educated guess here so value wise at the time of purchase a jacket made by the San Diego Leather Jacket Company for the Haggar Clothing Company would probably have run about $80-95.00 new back in the day. Today in used condition it’s probably worth about $75.00. Give or take a few bucks. BTW San Diego Leather company jackets are all over eBay with prices ranging from $85.00- 125.00 depending on condition.
Take it and wear the piss out of it. The more you beat it up the better it will look . So what did you pay for it?

Hi,
Sorry, that's not an original G-1. In fact, it's pretty far from it.
I hope it didn't cost you too much.
I paid 130. But if that’s too much for this Jacket even being what it is then I can return it to the seller on eBay! What do you think friend?

Did the seller list it as an authentic USN G-1 in his description or title of his listing ?
If he did, then he miss represented it and you have every right to return it . However, if he didn’t and you took it for granted that it was an authentic USN issued G-1….. sorry but that’s on you …. Just being honest with you.

No he said it was authentic but I also believe he thought it was so. I could get my $ back but it’s a nice leather coat for 130$. What do you think?

So ….heres my thoughts. You have a couple of options obviously. For $130.00 you didn’t get hurt bad, so you could keep it and as we said wear the piss out of it, the more you do that the better it will look. BUT … if you want an authentic USN issued G-1 from the Vietnam War era that’s Goatskin and has a real mouton collar, then you can find one for about $250-$350. Return that one and add some more money to your $130.00 and get want you really wanted in the first place . Here’s the realty of this hobby…. Most of us found out over the years that unless you buy exactly what you really want … you’re never going to be totally happy with what you have and will probably keep it for a while and then tire of it and sell it off, so you can get what you really wanted in the first place … happens here all the time.
So … figure it out … then let us know how it all plays out … at any rate since we helped you out with this dilemma , you are now obligated to post some nice “fit pictures “ of how the jacket fits you . Most importantly… WELCOME TO THE VLJ FORUM :)

Again, I’m amazed at the affordability of some of these g-1’s.
