I have a repro Werber although it’s not a 5 Star. I really can’t suggest which would be best for you, but Donigers were made with Goatskin where Werbers were made from Horsehide, so you may want to start with which hide you prefer and that may be a factor in your final decision.Hi All,
Could I trouble you for a little advice?
I’m planning on ordering an A-2 from Fivestar but I’m torn between the Weber or the Doniger. I’ve read the threads on the Doniger and it seems the consensus is that it’s very good but personally I’m not a fan of the long collars. The Weber looks really nice but how does it compare with the Doniger, does anyone have both??
Many thanks,
Elliot

Then the Doniger would probably be your option, unless the Werber in horsehide was priced around the same amount. Thanks B-Man, probably Goatskin with my budget...
Thanks I’ll find out the horsehide cost from Shawn. Is the Weber fairly a accurate repro? Then the Doniger would probably be your option, unless the Werber in horsehide was priced around the same amount.
FiveStar will make you a jacket any way you please. Just tell Shawn what you have in mind and they will make it.Thanks I’ll find out the horsehide cost from Shawn. Is the Weber fairly a accurate repro?
Unless Shawn had access to a Werber that he developed his pattern from, I doubt the accuracy of this contract . I think he had access to a Doniger pattern which is why most here are giving that jacket more attention . FYI the name is WerberThanks I’ll find out the horsehide cost from Shawn. Thanks for the advice, I’m going to order the Doniger A2. I found the separate thread on it and the input from you guys is amazing! The collar is growing on me too!Shawn's Doniger is looking really nice. I think he's made some slight upgrades since the last one we saw.
I'd go this route, seconding what the gents said above.
I do recall Shawn having an original Doniger to inspect. Then there has been a LOT of input from this forum. So, his Doniger is not stitch-for-stitch accurate, nor was it created from an original which was taken apart, but its the next best thing. It has most of the unique Doniger details, and in goatskin, a relatively good repro. And for the price, its an excellent buy!
Arguably more WW2 authentic than many other mid-range A-2 mall jackets out there.
I believe the Werber is more a generic pattern/jacket, based on photos and input from guys who wanted one. I think its eye-balled. So, is not very accurate compared to an original, as far as detailing goes. Although it does have a collar stand and Werber label...
If you don't like the Doniger's collar, fair enough then get a Werber in goatskin. You won't be breaking any rules.
Thanks everyone for all the advice, I’ve emailed @Shawn Ali so will post some pictures when it arrives! For what it’s worth, I think you’re making the right choice. I’ll also chip in that the collar looks less extreme when it’s being worn than when it’s laid out on the ground. See this picture of John Chapman wearing one of his Doniger repros with the collar snapped:

I’ve asked for Russet Brown with matching knits, there’s a Doniger A2 thread where a couple of members have posted some great pictures. Here: https://www.vintageleatherjackets.org/threads/fivestars-doniger-a-2.23319/What type and color of leather have you decided on? I'm planning on getting the goatskin but haven't decided on russet versus the reddish brown which Shawn has been using for the Doniger. Personally based on the photos I'm inclining toward russet. The reddish brown in some of the photos looks a little purplish to my eyes.
I think the Doniger is a great choice. Can't wait to see one made with all the recent proposed updates.
