I wonder, would you ever consider doing cloth or Nylon jackets? It's my dream to have a reproduction MA-1, L-2B, B-15 etc in a custom size. Being so tall I struggle to fit into them!

Its not hard to make.. In the past I wad doing Nylon and Fabric too.. But from few years specialized in Leather..@Shawn Ali so impressed with your work.

Thanks for appreciation and kind offer.. We have a specialized sampling Department whose role is just developments I can understand in all my new sampling something need to be invested at our side but atleast we are not ignoring the intentions of our beloved fellow's..

Pilot I have to agree with you that this is rare nowadays young or old there does not seem to be that how can I help you attitude every thing is sort of whishy washy today . This is one reason I like this forum because people are passionate about the hobby and many members help out each other and we have never met each other to boot . There is money to made out there but the mentality is I am not making Beaucoup bucks I do not want in . I owned a store with my girlfriend and we used to go down to NYC Broadway to buy costume jewelry the Koreans and the Indians were the first to open and did not close until there was no business ,they made in wholesale 10 cents on the $ but moved a large volume of product . They all drove 7 series BMW and deserved it because they worked hard . I feel the same way about Shawn because I know he is the same looking to do business where ever he can not waiting for it to find him and because of it he will find success. I am not a rich man but I have been around rich people and one thing they all have in common is they are always thinking and working putting deals together 7 days a week . One customer I used to have come in my store was speaker to fortune 500 companies about improving the gross income of a companies net worth . His pointer to success was word of mouth no amount of advertising brochures made any difference its what people you trust had to say that made a company on the road to success . Sorry to go off topic but what Pilot said struck a chord with me that I thought was very profound and bravo to him for recognizing it .

MSDS certificates will tell you all... Makers can ///should provide for all chemicals used in process..SOP’s... telling as well.. but...
Hide users buyers normally ask for these especially if shipping into USA and EU... not yet mandatory... but very soon.. too
much abuse and hidings on chemicals used in whatever processes...
EU / USA will become EXTREEMLY sensitive on these within the next few ... hmmm weeks/months... hmm

Good to know. To be honest, I am giving Shawn all of the benefit of the doubt to improve his product for the future. Felt it my civic duty to state my true impressions rather than any desire to slam 5 Star. The jacket otherwise is a helluva value for the price. I ordeered a jacket partly due to being greatly impressed with the man's enthusiasm and humility. I didn't expect the world but this is one quirk that came with the jacket I have never experienced in any other jacket I've bought. It's tough, I am giving it time to go away but I think the customer experience will be greatly improved if this can be remedied for future orders. Smell is subjective so who knows.

I am 0/3 regarding my jackets from Shawn...never had the "chemical" smell, just the leather.
I would do the following:
Hang it outside, preferably on days with sun and a little wind. Cold is fine, too. It gets the smell out of my jackets, when they had spent months in the basement closet.
If it doesn't help, try a little hot water treatment. Shawn mentioned waxes, so maybe the water will get off some of it...
If this doesn't help, then try a fabric refreshener (Febreze) on the lining. It might work through the lining and help to get the smell off the underside of the leather...

Out of the 5 jackets I've purchased, there wasn't any chemical / strange smells that I can recall when they arrived. I don't remember the plastic bags having 'off' odors either. I just looked around for some to check, but must have tossed them out.

If you see Bill Kelso as the Tesla roadster with J.A. Dubow the cheaper Model 3 spin-off as a top-down luxury to mass model, then Fivestar Leather is the buttom-up disrupter that satisfies consumers' desire to play with jackets at scale. Plenty examples in other industries where such disrupters from the developing world end up making luxury products after they've scaled. Regardless of my personal preference or shopping principles, I am curious if or when Shawn will start making jackets with high-end leather?

I asked Shawn that question many months ago and just recently ,to be exact I asked when he would be producing an A2 in Steerhide or Horse and gave my reasons why . I told him that these leathers age well and get better with use and sent a picture of a well used repro A2 . He told me that he would have something to show in a month ,that was a couple of weeks ago . Thomas Koehle has a wonderful A2 from Shawn ,I my self would like one in Steer or horse when they become available .

I have been in contact with Shawn during the last months, especially regarding new A-2 versions.
My idea was to get FS to make other goatskin contracts, like Spiewak or Doniger. Shawn even invested in new machinery, that will help to get details for new contracts right and enables him to work with thicker leather hides (so maybe that's when the cow, horse versions will happen).
As far as I understand it, these things are coming....but obviously the fashion business is FS core competence and "cash cow", so that seems to be their priority right now.

I don't know.
But my guess is that "we" (meaning the nerds at VLJ) are still a mini part of FS actual business....they are willing to expand that part, but so far will rely on their own skills and expertise. Getting an original jacket or better even at least three of a contract to figure out what the specifics of a certain jacket might be and eliminate individual oddities, is an investment, and they might not consider it necessary just yet. Shawn is really enthusiastic about getting us good and authentic stuff, but I have to admit that I do not know that for the guys running the actual production processes...
This might change of course, as soon as the crowd here is done with customization of lining colours and contrasting threads. As soon as we are starting to demand more authenticity, FS could get pushed to their limits.
I really hope that they are willing to go beyond them and be an authentic alternative to the more expensive European and US makers....
