I have no list of the contractors making B-2s during the war. I have never heard of McCoy's Sportswear other than RM.
I wrote to ask the seller.

This was his reply:

sorry it has taken so long to answer you, but I've been trying to find out if you are correct. I know Real McCoy makes reproductions, but This is McCoy sportswear & NOT Real McCoy. Real McCoy tagging also lists Real McCoy Mfg & not McCoy Sportswear CO. as the B-2 is tagged. I'm selling this for a longtime military collector who is downsizing his collection. I called him & questioned him about your email & he said he purchased the cap about 15 years ago at a Veterans estate sale. If you have any specific web site or information that verifies this is a reproduction, please let me know & I will cancel the auction & relist it as a reproduction. As you can see from my feedback my integrety as a seller is very important to me. Right now I have the collector I'm selling for telling me it's authentic & you telling me it's not. I can't find any information anywhere telling me it's not authentic. If you have more info . please share it with me.
thanks

I sure tend to believe him. I have never owned a RM item, much less an older one. Are we sure they were marked this way? I've just never heard of McCoy's as a contractor of B-3s, trousers, etc. Then again there was a "Dave's Mfg" that did web gear.

Yes, older Real McCoy's production was labelled McCoy Sportswear.

Yeah, David's right, older RMNZ productions had the McCoy's Sportswear label put in it. I used to own an old RMNZ A-2 that had McCoy's Sportswear in the spec label rather than a specific contract. Nice jacket, kinda based on the a Dubow pattern.

Sent him the info and the pic. He didn't know what forum I meant. He's being honest:

Dave, I've still been searching, can I get on & read the Real McCoy forum?. Everything I see leads me to beleive it is authentic. I can't find a Real McCoy's B-2 cap anywhere to compare, but all the Real McCoy tags I've seen list Real McCoy as the manufactuer & I have not seen anything with just McCoy Sportswear. There was an authentic B-2 that sold on ebay 2/28 that looks exactly like this one, but that one had the tag removed & I could'nt do any comparison. The repros I've found do not look anything like the cap i'm selling. I did find an Aureo repro that looked good, but it had a white made in USA tag & the military tag had a 1984-01 date so you knew it was a repo. I am going to let the auction run unless I find anything definate. The guy I'm selling for seems very knowledgeble & I don't think it's fair to him if I end it with out verification. I do have a money back guarantee if the winning bidder is not satisfied. Also, when I listed it ebay took about 5 hours to actually list & I figured they were verifying the authenticity. I also have had about 350 people look with 85 watchers & some of the bidders look to be hard core collectors from what they've bought in the past. I did not have any idea it would get the bids it has. Thank you for your input & if you come up with anymore info, please let me know.

At $400....someone will be paying quite a bit for a repro B-2. I'm suprised the bidders don't know of McCoys repro items?!?

He responded,
Thanks Dave, I'm kind of leaning with you, but when I informed the collector (also a good friend) of the new info he became fairly defensive & said it was authentic & he's knows more than the guy emailing me. he also said he bought it at the same time & place as the A-6A boots that I have listed right now. The boots have the Converse military tagging & there is no doubt they are authentic. It's like you said, nobody wants to think they have been duped. He has a lot of very nice stuff he wants to sell & to keep him happy I'm going to let the auction finish. I will however inform the winning bidder of all the information & let them decide for their self. Do you or your buddies know what the RM B-2 sells for if this is actually a RM? Thanks again to you & your buddies & please know I'm not trying to cheat anybody.

Sounds like the attitude of one of those older "dealers" that made me stop going to militaria shows! Craig is caught in the middle. I wouldn't feel comfortable selling something I didn't know anything about.

Some of the older RMNZ sheepskin stuff really is difficult to tell from originals once they've seen some wear.

I agree with Grant. It is a very nice cap indeed. But it is ...a Real McCoys Japan repro.
NOT original.
I have owned that same type cap years ago. By the way, notice the tag says Isola NY... thats a fictitious place. Its the city where Ed McBains 87th precinct was located. Who says the Japanese have no sense of humor. Come on guys.

He wrote again,

Dave, thought you might be interested in knowing that I had somebody email me that they had owned the same B-2 & it was a Japaneese REAL McCoy. The clincher is Isola, NY is a ficticious city in NY. I've tried to cancel the listing, but ebay doesn't allow it with under 12 hours left. I tried to add to the description, but ran in to the same timeframe problem. I've notified the high bidder as of right now & will give him or any other person to cancel the transaction, which I'm sure they will. I will probably be relisting in the near future as a Real McCoy repro. Thanks for your help & concern.

I know it seems like nagging the unaware but we do have to educate people. It will get only worse with all the great repros out there over the last 15yrs or so.
