What are the various setncil marks on USN jackets? Seems there were several types and in various fonts/ colors. Did these marks appear on specific makes/periods or were they mostly random till the peforated flaps came about in the 50s?
Yes, makers had their own stencil(s), and favourite colour(s), so they are helpful in identifying a maker ... combined with John Chapman's CD, you will usually get a result.
Painted USN were under the collars until about 1956-57. I have seen a couple of transition models were they had both the painted USN and the perforated USN, but those are pretty rare. AN-J-3a models had the painted US under the collar. As for which companies used what font and/or color, deeb7 is right in that you need to look at John Chapman's CD.
