Cheap Pattena

The most expensive thing you can buy is a cheap pair of shoes.

So very, very, very true. Get decent pairs of shoes and boots and you'll save a lot of money in the long run because a) they won't fall apart at the drop of a hat and b) they can be repaired/resoled by a cobbler.

In terms of cheaper leather jackets it's often because they're chrome tanned and with a thick top coating/layer which resists wear. Every single leather jacket will develop patina and wear eventually but a lot of those cheaper ones take an incredible amount of wear and abuse before developing patina.

Conversely you could argue that some of the high end jackets develop patina too quickly and easily now. No doubt due to some makers using leathers which develop wear very quickly to try and emulate that 70 years of wear look in a matter of months.

I like to buy jackets that are very worn they

look better. A light clean is all most of them need.
The former owner of this A1 had no sight so he scraped and bumped into things causing the tremendous wear.

I think the biggest problem with some guys you get around these sorts of places is they buy jackets right, left and centre and if they're new ones or hardly used, they never put in the kind of wear time that is needed to develop nice deep patina. If we take A-2s as an example (because they're arguably the most popular vintage jacket here) the reason why the ones in WWII period photos look good is because that's probably the only jacket the guy has and he wears it everyday and all day.

If you're going to buy and wear a lot of different jackets it probably makes a lot more sense to buy very worn jackets. Or have a very small number of wearers and really wear them all the time so they can develop wear and patina.

John that jacket pattena is gorgeous like honeyed wood. The buttons really make it too.
Wonderful...

But I save that wear time and process for the new buyer.

My ELC gets worn EVERY night. It is starting to drape like a glove. My BR RW had the look straight from the last owner. Same for my ELC RW B-3. Patina as bought and could never replicate it. Now and again you get that one jacket that gets the grain, the finish, the patina and the fit all in one. Just takes a lot of jackets moving through the door to find them.
