Lousy photo, poor description, slow and incomplete responses to questions?
Yes, I was about to bid on that one too - pulled before it even got going.
Assuming that's what it was and not a re-badged jacket or a decent replica - very hard to tell from the image.
the dr h link shows what looks to me to be an repro-scotland with a repro patch. some years ago, aero sold some nice leather patches, and when ordering an a-2, you could have one sewn on at the factory.
That was my nagging feeling too (too pristine), but try as I might I couldn't get any dimensions or better photos out of the vendor. Still it looked like a nice Aero anyway...
I'm not sure that I'd fully agree with that comment, Dave (it's ambiguous at best if the buyer was wrong in his/her guess and wanted to contest it).
The title of the listing was: '2nd World War Pilots Flying Jacket' and it was listed as 'True Vintage' with the rider that the decade was '30s-40s-50s'.
Assuming that Victor's analysis is correct and that it is a badged Aero (Scotland) then that doesn't qualify for vintage or the correct decade.
But, if it is the real deal then yes a steal at a grand.
His listing alludes to the claim that is a period piece but without specific facts. Belonging to a relative who was an RAF pilot in the Far East during and after the war paints a clear picture of what he is trying represent. If indeed fake he can always blame the relative for misleading info.
But just try to get money back from such a person. Even if possible through channels, it's too much drama dealing with such dodgy types, IMO.
Taking such a chance leaves one with months of evasive emails and threats and maybe a partial recovery.
Sometimes, usually, it's worth paying more to me for a legit piece rather than hoping to get lucky.
Another thread holding the seller completely responsible. Yes, these guys need a good kick in the you know what. And I'm usually party to giving them a heads up
in the case that they really don't know about something, or in the case that I think they do know, calling them out on it. But any guy that throws money out on something like this thinking it's a period original is obviously not a member here or experienced in buying flight jackets.
I posted some photos of CBI style patches a little while back and didn't buy them based on the opinions of others here, and I've been studying CBI multi-piece for 20 years. I could have fallen for half a dozen replica ROLEX watches this year but guess what, I didn't. Why? because I have no idea about them and realize the scammers are out there.
Buy some books, search the web, join a few forums, ask lots of questions. Then start buying high end flight jackets. It's a dog eat dog world out there buying anything from 5 dollar coins to high end militaria.
