Rob, you are a lucky guy.
FDNY fathers are, and were, a special breed of cat. Ballbusters, yeah, sure. But he loved you. He'd have told you if he didn't. That was my father-in-law, Big Jim Hopkins, and his brother, Gerald. Your dad probably knew them.
If you remember half of the stories he told, you'll have a two lifetimes' worth of entertainment; giggles, guffaws, and a few tears. And a drink or two in his memory, frequently and often.
BTW, as a personal observation based on Big Jim; he wanted to be buried with his old leather helmet. Cooler heads prevailed after the wake. It's a museum piece and a family heirloom. And we didn't reckon he'd miss it after all. But we did send him off with the photo of the missus, taken when she was 16, when they met.
I hope these observations from a stranger aren't too intrusive or personal.

Thanks for the kind words, Dad worked from 64 till 91 in the same house in Brooklyn, I heard alot of horror stories after a few drinks and a night before hunting with his buddies. Thats usually when they came out. And his leather fire helmet is still in our possesion, would never part with it.
