Looking at the CAF site, I see now that the Japanese planes are actually heavily modified American aircraft. They were both put together for the movie Tora Tora Tora.
The Kate is an AT-6 with a BT-13 tail and modified canopy, and it looks like the Zero may have been built from the ground up.
