509th Bomb Squadron patch I copied on my Pro-tech A-2

Bored on a cold February week-end, I fashioned a copy of a 58th Wing/509th BS, Operation Crossroads patch and put it on my Pro-tech A-2. I think the patch looks vintage. I traced it off a photo I printed and painted it with acrylics onto a piece that t-shirt iron-on stuff you get in 8 x 11 sheets. Ironed it to white felt backing, than sewed it on to the jacket by hand. Killed about 6 hours, but had fun.

Thanks, Dave! I coated it with a matte clear sealer to strengthen the acrylic. The aging process will be interesting.

Further research indicated that the patch was more commonly rendered with a deep blue background...so I repainted, and am glad I did, I think it is a significant improvement. I think I improperly referred to the 509th as a squadron, when it actually was a group.

Dean, heres another period shot of the 509th Insignia.
An interesting fact about the 509th.. They were based at Roswell, NM when the supposed "UFO" crashed near there in the summer of 1947.
