Help - 1930's White Flying Overalls

Cliff

Member
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a repro pair of 1930-40's white flying overalls. Originals would be great but I would think to find any now would be impossible, to find any in my large size would be a miracle.

Looking for the type that the early RAF pilots wore between the wars, particularly at the "Empire Flying School" . Do any Re-enactor specialist suppliers make such things?

regards

Cliff

You could contact Steve at Pegasus Militaria:

I think he used to make repro 'prestige' suits. I have a repro that may have been made by Steve:

Isn't that what Keith Park wore in 1940 when dropping in on various 11 Group squadrons? And usually about as welcome as a spiritual apparition too - we'd have been lost without him though............

If I had my way David, there'd be a statue of Keith Park and Hugh Dowding on a couple of plinths in Trafalgar Square. I'd bet 99.9%
of the adult UK population wouldn't have the faintest idea who Keith Park is, a curious situation because you could reasonably argue that it was really only his handling of things which saved us from Nazi enslavement in 1940. In true British fashion he was subsequently kicked out of his job (which was given to Leigh-Mallory I think) but it only magnifies the stature of the man to know
that he went on and organised the effective air-defence of Malta, which otherwise would have been invaded. And he could fly a Hurricane!

Nahh Rich, that was Trevor Howard

You mean I've been duped by the BoB again!
I don't know if this is apocryphal but in the movie when Goring was on the train visit to his fighter pilots (Give me a squadron of Spitfires etc) he wore pink boots. The producers felt this wouldn't be seen as credible, so the costume dept put him in black...................

Excellent, thanks very much Andrew. I think it would be great for him to be honoured in this way.

Is my old memory playing tricks or was Keith Parks from New Zealand or did he die there?

Cliff, he was definitely a Kiwi but you're right in that he returned home where he died in 1975.

How pink is "pink"? We talking, like, Pepto Bismol here?

Or the drab taupe we call "pink"?

Gone, but not forgotten.
A permanent statue honouring Kiwi Battle of Britain hero Sir Keith Park in London is a step closer.

A planning application for the statue backed by MPs in New Zealand and Britain, leading military historians and Oscar-winning film director Peter Jackson will be submitted to Westminster City Council this week.

If approved, the permanent statue would be unveiled in Waterloo Place in September next year, the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a Sir Keith Park Memorial Campaign spokesman said.

London Mayor Boris Johnson has already confirmed that a temporary statue of Sir Keith who commanded RAF squadrons that defended London during the battle will be put on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square for six months later this year.

There are plinths on each of the four corners of Trafalgar Square. Three hold statues of George IV, Henry Havelock and Sir Charles Napier. The fourth was for a statue of William IV, but it was never built. It is now the location for specially commissioned artworks.

Mr Johnson said he was looking forward to seeing the memorial finally in place. "Without his courage and leadership, the Battle of Britain could have been lost, which would have had devastating consequences for not just London, but the entire world."

Sir Keith, born in Thames in 1892, returned to New Zealand in 1948. He died in 1975, aged 82

Zoomer, I can't find anything to back up this pink-boot thing, but I do know I read it - which of course does not make it true. He was well known for his camp dress sense though, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were in a patent leather Pepto Bismol................... it's also a better way of remembering such a thorough-going ****.
