Eastman Duxford news...

On the Eastman site today...they will NOT be attending the May 17th Duxford Show which is bad news. No reason given, my friend who sells the books didn't get in to the May show and is now only doing the Flying Legends in July, something to do with the new organizers of the trade stalls apparently; we'll have to wait for our Eastman fix until July now, hope they'll have some jackets left!

This is bad news as for many a visit to the ELC mobile shop is part of the Duxford airshow experience. I wonder why this?

Indeed: so it is for me. But I was planning to visit Flying Legends only, anyway, and on Saturday, so each and every size of everything will then still be there. When (if) I go, I'll be targetting a B10. I tried on both a size 44 and 46 last year and both fit. Now I will have to zoom in and decide which one will fit best.
Too bad for those of us who were planning to visit the May Airshow.

Perhaps they are so inundated with orders at the moment that they feel they wont have the required amount of stock ready for the show?

You could be right there. They used to do The Festival of Speed, but no longer alas.
They might also think that not so many UK customers have the funds to spare at an air show.

No one can begrudge any business taking what it can especially in the current climate, and no doubt ELC and Aero are very busy as overseas orders flood in taking advantage of the weak Pound, but the Duxford shows were always busy and hopefully they are not turning their back on UK buyers as eventually things will turn 'round again, after all, it was a mere 18 months ago that the Pound was very strong especially against the US Dollar. It could well be that the price of stalling out at Duxford has increased considerably in the last few years and like my friend it may have been harder to get a prime site as the organizers seem to lean toward a more corporate stance perhaps. As long as they are still there in July (as I will be!) then hopefully the stock will be plentiful to appease the doom and gloom of this depression/recession.

Couldn't agree more. A Duxford airshow without the ELC tent & getting that leather smells fix... is disappointing . I guess it makes Flying Legends even more special :)

Even if also in Italy we are experiencing some economical issues, my finger was about to press the "confirm" button on a cheap return flight (ryanair) to London just to attend the show, see the ELC stand and, is that possible?, meeting some members of the forum.
I just wanted to wait a couple of days just to be sure.... Well, I hope that ill be able to attend the July show (hope to find another cheap" return flight) and kids' summer vacations wont jeopardize my budget for that..... Cheers, Carlo

Duxford used to be a great airshow with a large number of stalls mainly trading in aviation and other militaria items. Now it is full of the general C**p that you get at a poor car boot sale!

That's what happens when they get some jumped-up corporate company to run things, they never have any knowledge or care for what traditions exist, only in trying to increase revenue by hiking up the stall fees. Last May our stall was next to a guy selling bubble machines...we had to ask him not to aim them over our stall as wet, soapy bubbles and books don't mix! Biggin Hill was ruined in the same way, no one objects to having a kid's fun fair and associated stalls but better planning would put them to one side and keep the more specialist aviation stalls near the flight lines. Let's just hope they don't pull out of the July shows, then it would be a poor show in all ways!

I guess with a change in Duxford corporate policy and a hike in charges to stall holders deterred Gary and co from coming all the way from Devon for a one day airshow. A two day event is more cost effective.

They say on their site it is circumstances beyond their control so that would suggest it wasn't their choice not to attend. Of course they unfortunately didn't attend the last show of 2008 because gary had broken his arm, hopefully luck will change for all by July! I wasn't down to go in May as my friend isn't attending but had considered getting there by public transport however the ELC stand was a major reason for me to go so I'm leaving it now and will be helping at the shows from Friday to Sunday in July as usual, I wonder if they'll launch any new jackets!

Thanks for this sad news. I think I will save my petrol money and Duxford entrance fee (£25?) for the Flying Legends in July. Duxford without the ELC tent is just not right somehow. If its hot in July it will make trying on their new open grain Irvin pretty hot and sticky work but somehow I will over come the discomfort to concentrate on the buying of next winter's new jacket ! ;)
