ww2 Naval Issue Peacoat

found this in a closet with other naval items. It is a shorter version than some on this forum (33" from neck to hem) and has 8 buttons, high collar and 2 interior pockets. it is so dark navy that it almost appears black. I'm wondering if this is the heavy Kersey wool. Just the jacket weighs almost 4 lbs. I'm planning to sell this, but I'd really like to know exactly what it is. Thanks in advance.

that style with the shawl collar was introduced mid war [from the late 1920s through 1942 the pea coats had cowl type collars], and continued into the early '60s. from the contract numbers it appears to be circa mid-late '50s. I have one from the 1930s that has the slightly larger anchor buttons with 13 stars around the perimeter, a cowl collar, and the back bottom vent has a button closure. stick around, ya might learn something, and have some fun while doing so. also, pea coats like yours are all over greedbay,in the winter, selling for $90 to $175 for larger un mothed examples.

Welcome Whalelover :)

What a sharp Peacoat!

This particular label design dates the coat to 1949, and that years coats are known to have the nicest finish of all the kersey wool peacoats - what an excellent find!

There is an excellent peacoat dating guide on the Fedora Lounge you may find interesting. Here's the link....

Hey KennyZ,
What particular contract prefix points to mentioned 1949? In fact label has design of late 40's and very early 50's labels with Naval Clothing Depot, but what points on this to 1949?

Or you got this information from the US Navy Supply contracts list?

Cheers

I have no idea about these jackets.
However, they are very well made and are out of outstanding wools.
There are several on Crapbay and here is one with the same contract and the seller also states “1949”.

Cool, true that it is relatively easy to find these jackets with labels with Naval Clothing Depot, just how to date contract based on label prefixes ;) not a big enthusiast of peacoats in general.....just a bit curious about how to find production date from these labels (I'm ware about USMF threads etc.). THX!

Hi Erwin,

The link I provided at the Fedora Lounge has an excellent guide to dating peacoats, written by someone who has examined all the different peacoats, there labels and other nuances of these coats. Included in the guide are photo's of the different labels over the years, and the label on Whalelovers peacoat was used on coats made between 1949 to around 1951, according to the guide. Collectors commonly call this as a 1949 peacoat, though the actual year produced could be in the early 1950's.

THX KennyZ! I reviewed this reference, cool but not precise about decoding contracts prefixes, more suitable for a general information. THX!
