That is neat! It is sort of amazing that eBay let them list that considering it comes with a machine gun, which is likely a felony to sell or own even in that condition.

More interesting, is the US Government probably still considers themselves the owner of the wreck

In that condition the gun could never be operational, thus a non issue.

A friend of mine is looking into it. He is with the sheriffs department stationed at John Wayne airport. Sense the receiver is beyond repair, and could never be operational he felt no problem. He will ask friends in homeland security, and the fed's at work today and get back to me.

Talked to the Department of Justice phone 916-263-4887. Explained what was being sold, frame gutted and rusted through, no bolt or receiver, never able to chamber a round. He told me they get calls like this on WW2 aircraft a couple of times a year. Not to worry, if never able to shoot , chamber a round it would be considered a relic, or large paper weight.

That big rectangular part in the photo is the receiver. I think if you called the ATF and forwarded them the photo, they might well have a different opinion.

Doubt it, But I'm finished with this back and forth. Got my answer from the government, good enough for me, when you buy the plane let us known if you run into a sticky wicket with that paper weight.

I would guess it is a "parts" gun right now. One would have to reassemble it, the bottom etc with the M-2 bolt carrier to make it illegal.

I have a M1919 in parts(just missing the right side plate). What's ironic is it would be much simpler to reassemble it with a 3/16" plate receiver side and use the original carrier than to mill the carrier down to fit the required "restrictor islands" milled from an even thicker side plate. What that means is it is a cinch to make a "parts" gun full auto but a real PIA to make it legal.

Back to the plane. What would one do with that thing?
