Whoa, some incredible shots. That second one of the explosion is fantastic. Look at the shots of the Avengers over those mighty battleships-a sight never to be seen again, although probably just as well. Isn't that bloke in the first shot Johnny Depp? Thanks for posting those, Grant.

Hi Mikey,
The first photo is of Smith and you're right, he does kinda look like Depp. The original caption by Smith on the blast photo read, "sticks and stones and bits of human bones, a blasting out on Iwo".

Gene Smith also played a part in the jazz scene in NYC in the 50s and 60s, opening his loft space to jam sessions which he photographed and even recorded. http://cds.aas.duke.edu/jazzloft/index.html

Hes always been one of my favorite photograhers.

When I was in college, I took a photojournalism class, W.Eugene Smith was THE photojournalist who perfected the photo essay. He was wounded in WW2 and when he documented the effects of fatal ecological disaster from the mercury poisoning in Minamata, Japan, he was beaten by corporate thugs attempting to intimidate him. Instead of guns and bombs his tool was his camera, had he been in the military he would have been awarded the purple heart for his wounds suffered in combat and most likely other citations for the risks he took to document the troops he followed.

Yup, his life was the stuff of legends and they should make a movie...after all they already have the leading man, Johnny Depp.

Uh, nope, when she found out she wasn't wearing a GW, RMZ, RMJ, BR, Few, or ELC, and it was an Avirex, she couldn't get it off fast enough...one of the few benefits of owning an Avirex jacket. ;)
