Interesting to note that the shoulder holsters are being used as gunbelts - probably because there isn't room under an A-2 and it probably restricts movement if worn over it. And it looks very 1880's gunslinger !
Yes most of the guys used the shoulder holsters around their waists. Not always, but it was not "uncommon". These guys are all standing in front of a C-47. Love the jackets and the uniforms of the time. Especially like the .50 cal shell used as a "flag safety" in the breech of the one mans 1911A1! Classic!!
They must have been around some P-38's or P-39's as the shells around the one guys neck are 20mm, not .50 cal.
I was thinking that these shots might have been of these guys mucking around- the plane the'yre in front of and inside is a Dak, they're at a base in Italy (12thAF and a Brit Hudson in the background), but they're wearing shoulder holsters at the waist (I was told be a vet that he couldn't wear a waist belt as it got snagged), and he's draped in what looks like night fighter shells (every second is a tracer) so maybe P-61's on base?
I imagine that they were having some fun with props...
edit: just re-read your post above Dan and I agree.
The patch your "Unknown Photog" is wearing is the 10th Troop Carrier Squadron which was with the 60th Group, don't know if that will help, but maybe if you can find a 60th Troop Carrier Group page you could post the photo and ask if anyone knows him. [email protected]
