Gents,
Today’s example is not a flight jacket itself, rather it is an extremely rare and unissued M-1948 fishtail parka complete with the even rarer alpaca wool liner and trigger finger mittens.
After World War II, the Army developed a combat ensemble that provided the flexibility of a coat and better layering under extremely cold conditions; the Parka-Shell, Cotton, Olive Drab, M-1948, and Parka-Liner, Pile, M-1948.
There was no expense spared making this model. The finest materials were used in order to combat the severe Korean winters.
The parka-shell was made of wind-resistant cotton sateen in Olive Drab shade 7 and featured a snap-and-slide fastener closure, using a heavy duty TALON zipper, slit front pockets, an arm pocket on the upper left sleeve for pencils and cigarettes and a OD wool lined hood trimmed with coyote fur. The hooded parka liner was constructed of alpaca wool and composed of wool-pile cloth in Olive Drab shade 30A. Each liner also has a chest pocket which is unique to the M-1948.
This parkas are massive and extremely high quality, which is the reason they were only produced for a year, and in very limited numbers.
Say no more guys, enjoy the pics!
Regards,
Jorge
