I have had a broad range of ELCs in horse and goat. House and original contract patterns. The ELCs were both pre-War Horse and War Horse. So they covered the much hated smooth style (no grain developed as I did not wear them) to some with surprisingly great grain and character from the factory.
I have only ever had three BR A-2s. The BRs all had amazing hides and the previous owners had looked after them. The EXACT details are often not there; however NOS zippers are usually included and they are often priced over the ELC jacket, if they pop up.
I have an early ELC RW 27752, a BR Rough Wear and a RMNZ Dubow here. Of the three, the BR is the stand out. But the bugger creaks? As stated, I do not wear them....so a non issue.
I am of the opinion that any maker, could produce jacket number 0045 and it ends up with some sensational character and a super finish, then 0046 is made after it or along side it and it fails to replicate the same wow factor? This is where the Buy/Sell page here is so effective. With pics and descriptions you can spend your money confident of exactly how your jacket looks. Factoring in flash and lighting of course. Most here are jacket nuts, not photographers. Good Wear does the product photo thing VERY well. ELC to a lesser extent, but RMNZ leaves a lot to be desired...
If you can afford the price and a bit of a wait GW is a 'buy once, buy right' deal. But I woud also look at the Kelso stuff...Some super hides there...Just my two cents..
I bought a used BR in their famous bronco hide to check out how the leather was on behalf of Bill Kelso.
Let me tell you, I liked ELC's warhorse much better. The BR was thick, with little grain and would not break in as easily as the ELC.
Some of the details were off, and the craftmanship was worse than ELC and BK.
I put it on ebay immediately.
I tought it's leather wasn't even worth bothering.
