Good to see you got back safely, half expected not to hear from you again after that wild night out in Split.

Ok, something to do with mapping and PR? Let's say 21st Photo Recon Sq.

Roberto had to leave early so I never did hook up with him ,all the art was done by the time I got there .Sort of unofficial assistance thing .

I have not been following the "Red Tails" close enough... Is it our very own Roberto doing some artwork for the film? Incised patches? Hope you guys are documenting your work and plan to share more with us at the appropriate time. Here are two patches I painted several years ago...

Jeff, what process do you go through to pick a patch to make ?

When it was posted the 21st Recon Sqn. was stationed in Kunming China, I took interest since my dad was stationed there in a MIS (Military Intelligence Service) unit.
I googled the 21st RS, The China Falcons and found a little about it. There was a tribute page from a proud son and a write up in CBI Unit Histories. http://www.cbi-history.com/part_vi_21st_recon_sq.html

Just by following your patch work, I've been learning about the histories of some great units.

THANKS !

I took photos of all the patches I made for the film but I can't really post anything until after the movie comes out.

Hi Jay re the picking of patches I try to stay within the CBI field of operations because the patches were mostly made of layered leather and thats the style of patch I make best .The 15th airforce were incised and painted ,and the rest were chennile ,felt, printed on leather or painted ,some were canvas painted and the rest were painted directly on the jacket .I am at a dissadavantage to the painters they can reproduce patches with a lot of detail .I try to pick the patches with less detail because of the nature of sewing if it is to complicated it ends up looking a mess of holes and stiches .I also try to replicate patches that are not so often seen original or repro and generally pick patches that catch my eye because I like the design no real method just make them if I like them .I have spent a lot of time making patches and thought how to best replicate them similar to the period made ones .I feel I am getting closer to nailing the style and most of this progress is due to getting my hands on originals .The Japanese make some of the most wonderful patches ,the company is Custom KIng but they are too perfect this type of work would of never come out of Calcutta or China here is an example

Again this is just a hobby for me I sell some patches here and there which cover my material costs ,but for me the best part is putting a smile on someones face .I am surely not getting rich on it but that not what I do it for.
All the best Jeff

Nice works guys, really like your patches.
Hi Dave
It would have been nice to be there together, too bad we didn't get to see each-other on the set.
I still have to maintain my promise with you and have not forget about it.

Thanks Roberto,
I have some patches in the works for you also. After this weekend my summer holiday begins and we will have more time to work on patches. Just taking a week to travel with a youth choir - no big trips this summer.

Jeff,
Thanks for the kind words. That "magic period" look may have something to do with my age. Picked up my first crayon in the 1950s. I also pay attention to the discussions on this forum to get and idea of what folks like to see. Here are two vaiations of 428th FS patches. The bottom patch is lightly tooled and painted with Tandy Cova Colors. It is very bright even after trying to tone down the colors. The top patch is not tooled and painted with some artist acrylics. The active squadrons I paint for like the shiny new look and my VLJ buddies like the older period look...try to keep everyone happy.
