I did a little research and it was a supply vessel.

The USS Gratia, an Acubens class general stores issue ship I believe.

Yes.
He was in the Pacific so it all fits. He never did talk much about the war. He passed about 6 years ago. I'm 42 this month and he had me when he was in his 50s.

Have you done some research on the ship? I am currently researching on another vessel and found a couple of sites like navsource.com / archives.gov & archive.org very useful. If you're lucky (and interested) there are - of course depending on the ship - very interesting documents available.
