I asked the seller whether he could see if this big new AAF bomb squadron patch was covering up anything on the leather and if he could see any evidence of other holes in the lining.

I'm not at all suggesting that this Seller did it but It looks a bit like the leather in that general area has been rubbed back with something and this might have been an attempt by someone to just cover it all. Maybe he didn't see my questions before it sold but he never bothered replying.
On face value it did look cheap.
