Stamped USN under Church M-422a collar?

I bought an Edmund T. Church M-422a contract NXs-5133 last week on eBay.

What is puzzling me is there is no trace of paint in the U.S.N. under the collar. Instead it appears to have been stamped into leather since it can only be seen as a shallow impression.

My understanding is that these markings were typically added by paint using a stencil. Roger Moore has three Church jackets for the same contract on his site and all look like they were done that way.

I could maybe understand paint flaking off or even completely fading, but not that would leave an impression.

Have any other jackets turned up marked in this way?

Thanks Hacker and Peter.

Can this information be used to help date when the jacket was made (or received by the Navy)? Perhaps a cost-saving measure done later in the war?
