Reading deeper into the story it says:
A search of the United States Air Force serial numbers found this information: Serial number 26316 (56th FG, 634e RW, Spirit of Crawford County Missouri lost Saasveld near Weerselool, Netherlands September 21, 1944. MACR 9165. Pilot KIA

This is amazing. Saasveld/Weerselo (correct spelling) is less then 10 miles away from where I live; the road near which it came down is also known. The pilot was Oscar L. Cagle, I found this on him : http://www.woodlawnhigh.org/TATLER/Tatler__May2013.pdf
