Spewack A2 ebay

I need some informed flight jacket advic. I've bid a few times on a size 46, 1942 A2. I just bought a vintage Aero from Andrew and I'm hooked, I'm afraid. My only reservation is that it's goat rather than horse. That's okay and standard for my three Navy and Marine Corp G1's, but won't it be a bit lite for an A2? Please say I'm right - I really can't afford too many more of these! What do you say guys (and gals)?? Check it out on ebay.

Original A-2's vary in weight, and thickness of the hide, but really you won't notice much difference.

Buy the horsehide anyway ....

I have a few Goat skin A2s, Doniger, Roughwear, Bronco and a size 44 Speiwak. The Speiwak was a bit lighter goat skin than the other three probably the lightest of the bunch. I really like lightweight A2s which is not always the favorite here. However, GS tends to last longer than Horsehide. I have 60 year old plus goat skin jackets that look outstanding and can still be worn today.

I'm not a collector in the league of those who have already responded, but A2s (GW Doni and wartime Perry) are both in goat and find them both very wearable - they both get daily/regular wear whatever the weather. The skin of the Perry is a shade thinner than the Doni.

Having worn hide in the past, I have found the goat to be a little more forgiving when it's a bit warmer. Conversely, although I've read that goat is a little less effective as a barrier against a cold wind, I've not found this to be particularly noticeable.

I particularly like the way it breaks in quickly (e.g. I've had the Doni for about 8 months and its developing a lot of character) and remains supple - the Perry drapes very well despite 60+ years use and a factory respray.

I'm still looking for a suitable example of the Perry in HH, but were I to aim for one my preference would be for goat because of the pebbly grain pattern.

The GS on my Spiewak varies in thickness being thicker in the body than on the sleeves. As has been said GS is hardwearing and takes more punishment than horse.

I owned a Spiewak A-2. Nice sharp looking jacket but what looked to be mild flaking across the shoulders turned out to be terminal dry rot. I've seen a few Spiewaks on ebay with the same condition. Beware !

I guess - when it comes down to it - I've always liked the look, the heavier feel, and the distinctive HH smell a lot better than steerhide or GS. It's traditional on the Navy G1's and makes them authentic. I visited the Roughwear factory in Pa. some years ago and the owner showed me through. By that time their business and their government contracts were gone and they were just hanging on. The owner showed me a new steerhide G1 they were trying to sell to the military. I don't think they're still in business, unless they're the manufacturers of the new, rather skimpy A2's the Air Force has begun to issue. Have any of you guys tried out one of these?

Someone asked where the proffered Spiewak was being sold - it's from our buddy Andrew and the details are on Ebay. I'm passing on this one for now.
