Hello to everyone on the forum. This is my first post. Can anyone tell me what type of jacket two of the sailers are wearing in the photo above the one,of the" POW walking the plank".They are leather jackets with what looks like a halfbelt style or a long halfbelt style. Both have their backs to the camera.Would they be a military issue?
Many thanks in advance,Tudor.

Not to be picky ;) ...but.....That guy is stepping on the wing walk. Just off is left is the no step area. The area he's on is typically reinforced for just that reason....gotta get into the plane somehow!

Maybe not, Tudor .... the nearest one appears to have a centre seam, but it's not really clear enough to tell.

Some of the other jackets are civilian, the "walking the plank" buttoned jacket, for example.

You mean Gilligan there in the middle? Clearly the uniform standards were quite relaxed on this ship, so I'd imagine civilian jackets wouldn't raise an eyebrow. On the other hand, I had a passing impression that some of the jackets resembled rainwear of some kind. Is this possible?

Yes, that's the one, Jim. :)

That mouton collared double breaster, in the picture above it, has a good look. Almost like oilskin, and with an official looking appearance, but I don't recognise it ....

I need more books.

When I saw these pics I just assumed that some form of private purchase leather jacket was part of Sub culture, although I thought leather was only worn on U boats. There's a bloke who lives around the corner from me who was a Crewman of the USS Bream- i'll have to ask him next time I see him.

It's a life preserver. Hit the water and pull a pin, it inflates. They gave these to invasion troops most times. Less cumbersome than a May West.
