Shipping from Europe to North America

Hi Everyone,

I'm in need of a bit of help. There's a jacket I need shipped from Greece to Toronto, Canada but the shipper is being told by DHL that because it's a used jacket they'll only insure it for 100 Euros. I need it insured for 500 Euros.

Would regular mail service be better? Has anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? If you can please let me know I would appreciate it, thank you. Looking for your thoughts as soon as you can provide them - I need to be able to communicate to the shipper so that he's not running all over town with the jacket trying to get quotes.

Thank you everyone.

This is DHL postal…
DHL courier ( not postal ) issures für 10.000,- Euro… but its a different price.
A 2kg box from France or Germany inssured for 500 Euro to Canada is min. 137 Euro
Cost me 55 euros by FedEx from Tokyo to Madrid 5 day signed for shipping so I wasn't complaining

Thank you, much appreciated. DHL quoted 80 Euro insured only to 100 Euro, while FedEx quoted 127 Euro insured to 500 Euro.

Was the jacket you sent insured?

Yes inssured up to full loss up to 800 Euro
Edit, in case of full loss the buyer also want the paid shipping costs refunded, not only the jacket price hence the higher inssurance value :)

Thank you. I think I already know the answer to this next question - really, I just need someone to hold my hand with he decision as it's pricey - but you would never buy a jacket and have it sent uninsured, would you?

Seems folly but the added cost and import fees are crazy.

Yes I think it was insured, but I didn't see the value quote, it was definitely express signed for

I have yet to receive the FedEx import like last time haha takes them a few weeks to send the quote, but I think I did good, and yes I wouldn't and the Japanese seller wouldn't send bog standard as the only shipping choice was 5 day express

Okay, this just in: I read that goods with a value under $800 USD are not subject to import tariffs and taxes.

Has this been the experience of the US based members? If you bring something in from Europe, for example, and it's less than $800 USD, you just paid the shipping fee, yes? No additional taxes?

Please let me know as this may have solved my problem.

I have paid shipping fees and taxes as European and Spanish rules are different but it wasn't overly excess, last time 21 euros

There are a few posts here on VLJ where someone saved a few €$£ on the shipping /insurance costs… and now she/he/they is/are still crying about their lost (stolen) jacket and payment… low cost/cheap is not always cost saving..

Oh you're right, been there, done that already with a leather chair - had it shipped to a friend's place in Buffalo and I was going to drive across the border, pick it up and drive it home to Toronto - then literally three days after it arrived Covid shut the border and it sat at his place for almost 18 months. Finally had to hire a shipping company to drive across the border and then bring it back but it cost me more than if I'd just paid the import fee originally. Sigh. Great chair, though

Furthermore if you pay for the fastest and highest priority, customs have only a few hours to check and maybe charge/invoice… ( unless their are suspicious, which will never happen with a jacket ) hence you pay bit more for express, but save import duties since mostly no time to check in detail…. plus it will arrive… which is the main purpose…at the end you save!
