In 1917, Max Hoffman (1895-1954), a Hungarian immigrant, was a travelling salesman for Boston Overall Co (owned by Aaron Pritzker). Boston Overall was later to become "A. Pritzker & Sons Inc".

Around 1919-20, Hoffman came up with a new overall design he branded DubbleWare as part of his new company "M Hoffman & Co, Inc". He ultimately became a major manufacturer of mens workwear.

Hoffman also created the business entities "Royal Coat Co" and "Manhoff Sales Inc" all based in Boston.

In 1939, Royal Coat Co opened a plant in Newburgh called "Perry Sportswear". There were also apparel plants in Boston and Bangor, Maine.

One of the early Perry managers (first mention seen was 1941) was Martin Langer (1905-1992), a son-in-law of Max Werber of Werber Sportswear. He later started "LSL Garment Co" and "Air-Wear Clothing Co" in leased space within the same building.

In 1945 Perry Sportswear had 225 employees and was filled with post-war plans transitioning from 85% military production to a "large line of sports and outdoor wear, leather coats, vests and jackets along with gauntlets, caps, helmets and snowsuits". Eli Marcus was superintendent with Louis Pearlman as his assistant. Their head cutter was being sent to a NY school to "study new designs and patterns".

Unfortunately the building in which they were located was sold in 1946 forcing them to leave since they were unable to renew the lease. When Perry was unable to find new space locally, the company was dissolved. Only one employee (Eli Marcus) was retained by Royal Coat Co, and the equipment was shipped to the other Royal Coat Co plants in Bangor and Boston.

A group of former Perry Sportswear employees lead by Morris Wexelblatt and Louis Pearlman formed a new company named Conrad Sportswear to "establish an industry along the same line and make use of the experienced help of the former concern".
