Hi, Guys,

I know it's not jacket related but I just got a scan of my Dad along with his pilot anf the rest of the crew in Feb 1945.

Just notice how sloppily they are dressed - guess operating aircraft took a second seat to spit and polish.

Nice one Bill!

Surely you've got some more? Sheepskins even? They almost certainly would have had them at some point.

Bill - the last one left alive today is Harry - the pilot - he always says he never lost a crewman until after the war was over.

I still keep in contact with him - he's a vice-president of the Sterling Association.

Anyone know how to track the Sterling production numbers - this one's ident was 5G H (a Sterling IV) - at least I'm presuming that's it's ident from the last letter and the ident letters and aircraft models listed in Dad's log book.

Sheepskins are impossible to find. I sifted through 3 cartons, nothing, he must have froze ...

If Bill doesn't mind, here's mine ...

RAF Squadron 100 - Waltham, Grimsby
July 23 1944
2 days after being posted.
Father was the driver, standing to the left.

And here again, tidied up, in the centre ...

Hi, Deeb,

The more the merrier - after all they're our relatives.

But I will move it to the Photo section and rename it Relatives in Uniform. - Everyone ok with that?

Here's Dad, in advanced training, standing on the wing of an AT-6. I'm guessing this was taken in very late 1944 or early 1945. He wasn't even old enough to vote.

Here's a 7th AF crew (his friends) in the Central Pacific:

Nice early press photo. It was used a lot in the Chicago Tribune and other local papers on the occasions he received medals:

And here's one of his, taken during his missions. You can see the strain.

Great pics chaps.

I am trying to find a picture of my relative General Donald Clinton Swatland, Chief of Technical Procurement Division, Air Technical Service Command from 1942-5. When as a Colonel he was ferried by a pilot whose log book and jacket I own. Indeed what is amazing is that when I bought an A2 from the States two summers ago it came with the pilot's two log books. There is an entry for early 1944 when the Major ferried Col Swatland across the States! I could not believe it when I found the entry. Now I am trying to find a picture of hinin uniform-can you help?

This is the only logbook I have ever owned and I had no idea of a link with any relatives when I bought the jacket. Here's the entry.

A photo of my Dad in China, towards the end of the war, 1945. He's the one with the CBI patch on his shoulder.

I thought I'd show you some pictures from "the other side"...

Here is my grandfather from my Mum's side...fully dressed in his best uniform on the morning of his wedding day. He joined the Wehrmacht in mid 30s and started a career as NCO in the Army. He was wounded in the first hours of WWII (headshot), survived and returned to his unit a few months later. It finally ended with Stalingrad and a return to Germany in early 1950.

This is my grandpa from Dad's side...Navy, as you can see. He as well joined the Kriegsmarine in the 30s. Early in the war he worked for naval Intelligence units. Later he served on board a torpedo vessel, which sunk off the french coast. He survived and returned to his intelligence unit and stayed there until the end of the war.

This is me...well, shortly after school, when a size 40 jacket was still comfortable...I must have grown a bit since then...Picture was taken 18 years ago!

opa1002.jpg

And finally, this is my Dad. He was a mechanics crew chief in the German Air Force. Picture was taken in the early 70s.

Hi Ties,
Those pictures of your grandfather in the German army during WW2 is fascinating. Hope you dont mind me saying, when I saw the picture of yourself you dont look German, well not northern European but I could be mistaken. We were told during the war the Germans were very specific about race? However I saw a documentary that the Germans recruited Turks and Indians into the their army towards the end of the war.
