Here's another rare colour shot, apparently the little guy was the CO known as "Shorty"- story was that he was shot down in enemy territory but was rescued by his No2 who managed to land in a field and pick him up and safely return to base...
Over the years I'd heard whisperings/rumours/stories about the great rescue of 'SHORTY SHORT' that 'if true,' would stand alongside the famous rescue of Mussolini. This is the first photographic evidence that I have (and maybe anyone) has seen to confirm that this mythical story is in fact TRUE..!
...It has been said that after this rare rescue photo...all he asked for was a Tootsie Roll stogey...shot of 2%....and his Mum.....
However..the only thing ShortyShort asked for was..."lets do it again..please...can we"?!
Well done Rich, I tried but failed hopelessly to do that. Typically contrived RAF doco of the time but it's sooo good and that particular part especially. These look great and they show how and where this stuff was stored.
I love this film, I've watched it many times now - obviously staged but it shows so many things you can only read about otherwise.
I'm so glad someone had the presence of mind to film it.
Andrew, I use VLC for grabs - it's here if you don't already have it - free too.
I have VLC but haven't tried that method- great suggestion. After our last discussion I tried Handbrake and managed to rip half of it but ended up being ditracted by something else.
I agree Rich, we are lucky that they decided to make it, and especially in colour, to me it really is a documentary in the true sense.
If I remember rightly, just one guy decided to make it, more or less off his own bat. I think the Brits lagged a long way behind the Germans and the Americans when it came to recording these wartime events. Mind you we didn't even preserve a Whitley or a Hampden or a Halifax, I don't suppose a few cans of 35mm film stood much of a chance......... I guess they wanted to think more about the future, whereas us lot are always dwelling on the past.........
