As discussed before it's funny how the Spiewak contract is more prone to red rot than others.
Steve does damper conditions cause it? Or excessive dryness? I haven't seen it here and I've seen old jackets from the Spanish civil war, I owned one, a old republican leather, bit scuffed but still supple

Storage conditions play a part but as Vic says in this case it appears to be more down to potential issues in the actual tanning process.

I would reckon that the spiewak hides were sourced from India, or Pakistan where they were cured and tanned with Uriac acid, ie: piss. Thus the break down of the fibers over time. Of course this is but a forensic guess.
