RAF and AAF wings on A-2's.

I found this early war picture of two pilots from the 4th Fighter Group that has both RAF and AAF wings painted on their A-2's. I posted this picture on the previous forum and felt it was worth a re-post.

Aside from the interest in the RAF wings, their A-2s are by no means too tight fitting...on them. I wonder how they came by those wings.

The two were probably members of Eagle Squadron -- RAF squadrons of volunteers from the US. After US entry into the war the squadrons were reassigned to US command. In fact, the 4th Fighter Group flew Spitfires until conversion to P-47s. I think the image is labeled 4th FG. I'd guess they added the RAF wings after they received their US A-2s. It's hard to see in the picture, but I think the RAF wings might contain the Eagle Squadron insignia in the center. Might be wrong about that.

Hey

Does anyone know if there is a roster of the RCAF pilots? My Uncle flew for the RCAF, RAF, then USAAF but I've never been able to track this down.

Has the guy on the right had a patch removed from his jacket or is there a patch there that we can only faintly see?

Yes. On the left side of his jacket -- a rectangular marking. I can't tell if it's stitch holes or a wiped out patch. Curious.
