Hello, I have a 1984 Ralph Edwards G-1; can someone please tell me the direction of the USN piercing on the wind flap? Does it go across or top to bottom, for example, USN or USS? Before I commit, I'd like to make sure it's consistent. Does authenticity matter in this case? Much thanks

It should look like this:

However, IIRC, it has occasionally been seen like this:

U
S
N

I doubt it matters too much though - it's a 7823E. They're good jackets, but not worth very much.

I have a RE from '61, the USN runs vertically. Appears the later models do the same.
Here's a couple of threads from way back

As far as 'authentic'? Compared to what? If it's an original jacket from '84 it's authentic.
If it fits and is comfortable, go for it.

Also, very informative thread below, well worth a read. The chaps put a lot of effort into this.

This pic is from a Ralph 84', same as the 61' above.

As Jan said, it doesn't make much difference. They don't even try to make repros of this model, it is very common unless it is a NOS or Id'ed to someone important.
