Question about my G1

I am not a collector but I happen to have to have this one, no idea how old it is, the tag is long gone. I have seen the painted USN under the collar of G1 jackets before but, this one just has a U.S. painted on in yellow. Is this uncommon, common, something some jackleg did later?

Hi Hildy
It would help to see the front of the jacket with closer shots of the pockets , zipper , collar , and knits . Also the interior of the jacket . Then we could give you more specific information . Welcome to the forum !

The US is freehand, not stenciled like the originals. Looks like the collar has been off at some time or another.

I am pretty sure that the collar and zipper have both been replaced at some point. It doesn't really matter to me as this is just a beater that I wear daily in the winter. My other G1 is the one I was issued in 75 and I rarely wear it anymore...honestly, it is a bit tight on this old retired sailor.

IMHO the “ U.S.” was painted by a 6-8 year old child...IMHO not legit... the rest maybe... but front photos required..

Legit! 70ies/80ies...Painting is just a decoration... not issued/legit.
Patch? details inside outside, please.

Squadron patch is Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Six (HC-6), a Norfolk based Vertical Replenishment Squadron which operated H-46 helicopters. It was established in 1967. It exists today as Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Twenty Six (HSC-26) flying the MH-60S helicopter. G1 jacket appears to be a MIL-J-7823E spec. That spec was originally issued to officer and enlisted aircrew beginning in 1971 and continues today. Manufacturer would be difficult to determine without the tag. There would have been no stencil on that spec, that was discontinued in the 1950's I believe. So, not collectable but still a good stylish and functional piece of gear. Enjoy!

Phrog Driver, thanks for your information, I probably should have mentioned that I already know about the patch...I put that on there. I spent two tours with HC-6 in the mid 70's and again in the early 80's, also HC-3 and HC-16..I was just curious about the jacket and the mismatched collar. It looks as if it, and the zipper have been replaced at some time. Love them Phrogs.

Can’t say for sure, but looks like somebody may have replaced the original collar, which would have been Dynel (fake fur) with a real mouton one, and tried to dress it up as a WWII jacket with the US ‘stencil’. Almost certainly pressed cowhide as opposed to goatskin, which earlier ones were. I have one very similar, great jacket and the leather has worn in beautifully. Have thought about doing a similar collar mod myself.
