Hi all, some Navy stuff now... a lot from VPB-111 plus some other VPB units.

More great pictures Stu, thanks alot.

Coming from a culture where we have always had quite separate Armed Forces definitions and roles, can someone please educate me on what these particular Navy Crews were doing and why they had their own dedicated (what appears to be) bomber corps? It's obviously something that the AAF couldn't do but working in parallel-it intrigues me.

Thanks

Hi, few more mixed bag some just post war in the early 50's.

Most of the PB4Y pics above were taken on the Mariana Islands.

Great pic's Booze, dames, jackets and airplanes! Thats what sailors like! (brown shoe sailors anyway). Not too sure about black shoes.

Umm...fantastic pix, but these are PB4Ys (Liberator or Privateer), not PBYs (Catalina).

In answer to Leadsky: one thing Navy patrol squadrons (VPs) did was...patrol (antisub mostly).
Another was photorecon. A dear friend of mine flew Liberators out of Kodiak in 1949-'51, photographing the Naval Petroleum Reserve areas. Most of them had never been well mapped; some hadn't even been fully explored. Al carried a .38 in a shoulder holster just in case of a forced landing in bear country. Thankfully, he never had one.

Now, can we all agree this a/c's actual name was censored?

BIG DICK might have been just a big guy named Dick, but might have also meant something else in relation to the "censored" name... :geek:

Thanks for clearing that up, I was a little confused, but enjoyed the pics nonetheless. Don't let anyone tell you the Navy wouldn't put patches on their FJs!

Wow, where did you find all these?? Thanks for posting! There's at least 1, maybe 2 PB4Y-2 Privateers in there as well.

Can I share these with the fellas at the WIX?

Great site. Mostly for vets, tho, so there isn't info on every squadron, just the ones of vets who found the site.

Before today I had never seen a pic of a Navy officer with his service cap crushed. :?

If you ever read PT-109, this was common with PT Boat crewmen also. Very salty too.
