Today's example is not a flight jacket itself, but rather an extremely scarce deck jacket. It was originally designed for the use of Navy personnel during WWII.
Introduced in 1943, the Deck Hook jacket replaced its predecessor, the Deck Zip jacket. This earlier version came with a front zipper, which frequently froze in cold winter and was difficult to operate with gloves.
The newer version featured a hook system for closure, addressing the issues of the previous design. This improved deck jacket also featured silver stenciling on the upper back of the jacket, displaying the identification text “U. S. NAVY” in block letters, unlike the earlier jackets it replaced. This latter modification was to avoid Navy personnel on shore operations being mistaken as enemy troops by other U.S. Forces.
Throughout WWII, the Deck Hook jacket became an iconic symbol of U.S. Navy operations worldwide, and since then, it has been a highly coveted piece among collectors.
This particular model was only produced for one year, hence its scarcity.
The grade of preservation of this example is unbelievable, considering it is 80 years old. All parts are original and fully functional.
Needless to say, these jackets are extremely hard to find in any condition.
Say no more, enjoy it!

Jorge
