Original A-2 jacket finish

Hi, Folks,

Were the original A-2 jackets done in an aniline drum dye and then a protective semi-aniline finish applied?

I'm assuming the only spray finish jackets were those done as depot refurbishing and then re-issued?

Based on some of the variant originals I've seen, I'd guess that there were hand applied and spray-dyed -- and some aniline (wearing fast and often), others more sturdy (laquer?) that wear like nails.

Probably as varied as the manufacturers and the years the A-2s were produced.

Great avatar you have there Atkins.

Thank you Sir, it's an Al Buell's Girl 1950-ish illustration, the bowler hat is an item i add to it. She's the girl i want to put in my next A-2( hopefully GW or ELC ), which in this case is still on the collecting samples stage. I'm still trying to find out what is "Aniline dyed, vegetable tanned leather" looks like.

Bill, i have to share this, i have a sample of drum dyed aniline horse hide( vintage color ) from US Authentic, which has the color dyed all the way through, nothing like close ups color photos of original wartime jacket i've seen which show peanut color leather underneath.

I also have Goodwear horsehide samples which have peanut color leather, and i think John sprayed the color.

Pardon my English and hope that helps

Regards,
Atkins
