for us in Europe (me in Belgium), there is no importance regarding his involvment during conflict. combat or not; hero or not.
he is for us (me) a great movie star.

Bet that's a comfy A-2. Not a bad idea, and it doesn't really change the look of the jacket. Also the epaulet has no stitching on it!
I could make one and call it the "Flying Tiger" :D

Is that a line of stitching above the waistband (along the lines of the 1939 Werber)?

Any evidence of snaps on those collar ends?

Is it just me, or does that jacket have an underarm gusset?

I think it's the back seam of the sleeve folded over.

As to the epps, no one thinks that's a rank tab sewn over the box stitching?

And where is everyone seeing the exposed pocket buttons, or are you just goin' by memory?

If you look just in back of where the sleeve is folded over you can see a very faint stitching line, that's what looks like a gusset to me. The epaulet looks smooth to me all the way up to the neckline, no stitching beyond the box... :ugeek:

I think we need our trusted resident photo researcher Marcell to find some more pics.... :D

Here's a photo from the same film. I'm no expert on WWII A-2s, but I'm guessing that JW's jacket is a Super-Duper-Doniger. Just look at those bodacious collar points!

I Kinda' see what you're saying on the faint stitching for a gusset, but I agree -- we need more input to make a decision!

I think the epp drops out of sight before it reaches the neckline -- and Atticus' picture is no help, but it does show that there probably aren't any collar snaps.

Maybe this one will help. Is that a big silver snap I spy down near the zipper box? I dispair that Big John's just wearin' sumpthin' from the prop room.

And isn't that Dai, the cage fighter from Swansea, to Wayne's right?

I didn't think there was a question there -- from what I recall (from the last time I saw the movie with an eye for flight jackets) there's a big seam across the back of his jacket too.
