Always wondered why they wrote on bombs. The people the messages were intended for, never got to read them. I suppose it made the guys delivering the messages feel good .
Reminds of when I was but a lad and would haunt army navy surplus shops just to see all of the neat stuff they had. Most of these shops had a box of these mini bombs near the check out area. These were steel finned bomb shaped, about 2 1/2” long. For their size they were heavy, so perhaps the steel shell was filled with lead? One of the proprietors of one of the shops said that they were used in wwl to be dropped by the bucketful from aircraft, on to ground troops. Not exactly smart bombs, but I would reckon effective for what they were designed to do.
