I don't think the FSSF was in Italy as part of the Salerno landings? Didn't they arrive later into the campaign?
He would have been in some unit that sailed from Tripoli to Salerno, based on the article. Could be 36th, or 45th Division. Possibly also 1st Ranger Battalion?
