The waist knit looks original, but the wrist knits are newer replacements.
The jacket looks like it was slathered up pretty well with something- hopefully not mink oil.....
To me, the jacket looks like it's on the verge of "red rot", not unusual for something pushing 70 years made out of animal hide- and a tip off is the obvious "grease job". For that reason, I would never buy something that old unless it had original patches, artwork and provinance to some veteran, and then it would have to be for display only. Those are tha jackets that sell for thousands of $$$$.
i concur, redye [look at the dyed stitching, and zipper tape]. yes the wrist knits, and possibly the waistband are replacements. more often then not, redyed a-2s are real stiff, due to the redye process [chrome], thus the reason for the owner trying to "soften it with some kinda goop. chrome redye leads to fissures, and or cracking of the hides. the dreaded red rot? possibly, but its hard to tell with out having the jacket in hand. under $500 you can take a chance, but over that amount, its a risky investment. my .$02.
