Not the rarest, but probably the most popular flight jacket ever designed; the MA-1 Intermediate Flying Jacket has a long history that spans from the mid-50's to the mid-70's when it was replaced by the CWU-45/P made of nomex. However, its popularity extended beyond the military and became a staple outerwear piece for non-military audiences worldwide.

The 50's saw a rapid progress in jet military aircraft, but it was also prone to accidents. Evacuation in the event of an accident became easier due to the popularization of the ejection seat, but the problem was finding and rescuing the pilot afterwards. To make this a little easier, in the early 60's, the U.S.A.F. adopted an orange rescue lining for the jacket to aid in pilot rescue after accidents.

This example made by the prolific Skyline Clothing Corporation in fiscal year, 1962 under Spec MIL-J-8279C, was the first MA-1 model with an Indian orange lining.

This jacket is a NOS (New Old Stock) example which is hard to believe after 61 years. The knits are immaculate, zippers are mint and functional, and it even retains the inspector tag in the pocket. The highly desirable Extra Large size makes it a hard-to-upgrade piece.

Let the pics talk!

Regards,
Jorge

Wow, very nice example of the Skyline MA-1. One interesting thing about this particular DA series of Skyline is the misprint/misspelling of the word 'Coporation' on the tag. I have only noticed this on the '62 series Skyline jackets. Having been issued an MA-1 jacket in the USAF in 1969 I have followed the MA-1's for some years and gathered data and photos. Have only rarely seen one this nice! Thanks for sharing!
